Wiring LED's onto your bike: step one

    Wiring Lights on Your Bike
    Step By Step

    Items needed/suggested

    16 Gauge wire
    Desired 12V switch
    Needle Nose Pliers (Suggested)
    Snips
    Wire Crimper (Suggested)
    Lighter/heat gun (for shrink wrap)
    Shrink Wrap (suggested)
    Various connectors (see pictures)
Tools to take off parts on bike (vary by bike and where wiring is run to/from)
Fuse (I used 20A, but may vary?)

    Part One
    Wiring your 12V lighted switch

    1) Since the switch I used it lit, it must powered, thus begins step one.
    • Use the 16 gauge wire to test the distance between your battery and where you wish to mount the bike. Mine was approximately 3 foot. I ran it through the bike and cut it, then took it back out, simply because it was an easy path for me. Some may have it a little harder. After getting the length cut 2 wires this distance.
    • Start by making your power wire. Use one of the wires you cut This runs from the battery to the switch you choose. Attach one end of the wire you measured to the switch. I purchased my switch at Mejier for less than $4.00 (It has 3 prongs power (for the light in the switch), Acc (for the LED’s later), and Ground (for the light in switch)), to a connector like this:

    • Crimp the wire with the connector, slide on heat shrink, and apply heat. Now slide the connector onto the power prong of the switch.

    2) Next comes the ground wire. Use the 2nd wire you cut for this. The easiest way to do this, is simply run it to the negative side of your battery.

    • First, add a connector to one end of the wire and heat shrink it. On the other side, add a battery terminal connector, like this:

    • Now you’re almost done. Put the ground onto the switch. Add the fuse to one side of each connector. It should look something like this:

    • Now, disconnect the wires from the switch (if you want) and run them through the bike as you want. My switch is going to be located on the top of my upper fairing. I will post pictures when I do this. When you get done running the wire, attach the power to the positive (+) side of the battery, and the ground (-) to the negative side. Now attach the battery terminals to each. It will look something like this:

    • Now tuck all the wiring left over into the battery tray area, and if you want to tape the two wires together to create less wiring confusion. After tightening down the battery terminals, make sure the light is on in the switch. Now put the bike back together, and put the switch where you want it. This is what mine looked like when I got done:

I am wanting to wire up some LED turn signals into the rear of the bike. Can I just take the wires that are already ran to the back and make it work?

I would hate to have to turn one switch for a left turn and then another switch for a right turn. It would be way easier to just use the stock turn signal switch. And I am sure it possible.

Yes those will work perfect. If you cut the oem plugs off the stock signals, you can put them on the ends of the new ones and then just plug them in..... It will give you a fast blink thou, with the leds. You can get a healer from tobefast or just let it be...... I think it draws a lil more attention really.....

    Lightbulb

Nothing like a little engineering to start the day off right.
