I have learned this: Front brake + recently resurfaced gas station parking lot + nightime moisture = instant groundsmack with no warning.
and: Cool weather + cold race tire + hard lean + too much throttle = rear end slide that turned into a lowside that broke left lower fibula.
and: new bike + too much speed into unknown corner = hard braking that stands you up and sends you into roadside gulley.
and: if your going to do something as dumb as a rolling burnout at 60mph you better lean way up over the front tire or it will give and almost take out you and the friends you are riding with.
    and: ???

1st wreck.....i learned how important it is to cover the back brake when learning to wheelie

2nd wreck.....i learned the importance of wearing protective knee gear. i didnt have any on when i did a back road ride ....came into a corner too hot....low sided. broke my left arm, right knee cap got chipped had to have 18 stitches in that one and 19 in the other.

both of my wrecks couldve been prevented i feel like and couldve ended much worse so im not complaining. It was definitly rider error.

As a fresh rider a car pulled out right in front of me and I panicked with my hand over the front brake....needless to say a bad combination. Flipped over the front of the bike and landed on her trunk. She got out and said she never saw me coming....I was on a bright yellow bike..
Lessons learned- assume that everyone is not paying attention and doesn't see you, and don't over react. I could have lightly swerved and missed her but I was new and let fear take over.

There are 3 kinds of riders; riders that have crashed, that are going to crash and riders that will crash again... Just stay loose and dont try to stand up till you're SURE the crash is over

Well I learned that it's easy to total a bike in a 5mph lay down. Not that i've actually done it, but the smallest, cheapest thing that should only cost about $15 ends up being $415.. Insurance told me I had $7300 in damage. I coudnt see it... Brian asked me the other day how much I thought was done to his. I said $4k based on what mine came to. His responce was a laugh followed by $7100 I think it was

Was new to sportbikes and met some riders at the clubhouse and rolled the park scenic loop tried to keep up and over corrected in a turn ate some rocks in the side of the road, but thank goodness for my gear cause I could have cracked my head open on the rocks. P.S thanks to all the cagers that laughed as they rolled by and said slow down lol. $7300 damage too (REALLY?)

Just had a crash this week on the street. First one in about 20 years or so. Result was a high side that broke two ribs (one separated).

    What I learned:
    1) Cold weather + dot slicks + oil/gravel = low speed slide
    2) Do not, do not (say it 1000 times) chop the throttle when going into slide. I don't remember doing it, but I must have or I would have low sided.
    3) Always wear gear + helmet. I flew over bike and landed on my side first, then head second on concrete. I have no doubt that I would have had a substantial head injury if I did not have my helmet on. My helmeted head bounced off the concrete. Broken ribs are a bummer, but could have been worse.
    4) Accidents can happen anywhere and at any speed. I was going perhaps 20-30mph and I was within blocks of my house on a straight patch of road (turning onto the road). See #3, always wear gear even for short errands.
    5) Separated broken ribs suck. I've broken ribs before, but not separated. You can feel the bone grinding against bone when you move and there is not much that can be done with it until it heals naturally.
    6) Cagers were cool post crash. I had two people stop and get out of their cars to ask if I was okay since they saw it happen. I slowed traffic for a bit until I lifted my bike on its sidestand and pushed it off the road. Everyone was patient and no honking or bad comments.

    Great thread....lots to learn.

Thanks man. I'm with you...wear gear and respect the bike. You'll get bit if not. I'm already writing on the chalk board..."never chop throttle" a thousand times.
