New tech ‘retrains’ damaged spine (DubCoast Update)

So, some of you know that Andrew, (DubCoastLBRider), was in a motorcycle accident in 2007. He was paralyzed from the chest down but he has been going through some test trials in recent months to possibly help him regain his ability to stand, and maybe one day walk again! So far, the results are good!! Technology is amazing.

    New tech ‘retrains’ damaged spine
    Last Updated: 10:56 PM, October 27, 2012

A man paralyzed from the chest down has recovered the ability to stand and move his legs unaided after his damaged spine was retrained using electrical stimulation.

Andrew Meas, 33, of Louisville, Ky., was able to stand almost immediately after electrodes implanted into the lower part of his spine were switched on.

He’s also able to move when the implant is turned off, say astonished scientists.

The results are potentially revolutionary as they indicate the spine could be capable of recovery years after being damaged.

Meas, who suffered a spinal injury in a car crash in 2007, that paralyzed his trunk and lower limbs. He is one of three volunteers to take part in a study into the use of electrical stimulation in people with spinal injuries, run by scientists from the Frazier Rehab Institute and the University of Louisville.

Three months into the study Meas tried to move different parts of his body when the implant was switched off and discovered he could wiggle a toe. He has gone on to develop further movement in his legs.

He told New Scientist magazine: “I can feel more muscle contraction in the bottom of my left foot and I’m working hard to strengthen that. I can kick my foot out and lift up my knees.

“When it happened for the first time, we were all really excited about it. It was amazing — the most normal feeling I’d felt since my injury,” Meas told New Scientist magazine.

It is thought the stimulus provided by the implant strengthened “silent” connections across the damaged spinal cord or even created new ones.

Last week the scientists presented their findings at the Society for Neuroscience Conference in New Orleans. They said that all three of the volunteers had regained some voluntary movement but so far only Meas was able to move when the electrodes were switched off.

Reggie Edgerton of the University of California, Los Angeles, who also worked on the study, explained: “His spine has been retrained and the circuitry has been reorganised in some way so it has become functional. There must be significant reorganisation not only below the injury but above the injury in the brain.”

So far, none of the volunteers can walk without support — but Edgerton said that with technological advances the scientists hope to continue to increase the level of function.

That's awesome! It seems like it was so long ago when we all rolled deep down to the rehab center to see him.
