I have a western digital external hard drive that wont power up. I don't think it was dropped but it does have a little rattle now. How can I get the data off it and on a new drive?

Try sticking it in the freezer for 30 min.
most times you can take it out of the case, and just plug it into your computer. Depending on age it should be SATA or IDE, SATA if relativity new. If you have a laptop might just have to buy a new external case for the drive, or could just be as simple as replacing the power supply on the cord, or fixing a short on the connection.
Western Digital external drives are notorious for having the "wall wart"/power cable go bad. I have had two wall warts go bad within the last two months, and just recently ordered a two replacement cables that I just received last week. I got it here. Before buying if you want to bring the drive by my place, we could try it with one of mine.
It could also be the external housing going bad, or the worst case, the drive itself. If you having trouble with a drive, then I would quit using it and backup your data elsewhere as soon as possible, but you should already have a backup of that data. Pull the drive and connect to a computer.
I can help you if you want, if you don't feel comfortable in opening the external housing let me know. It's easy, but don't expect to use it again. Pull the drive connect to a computer, or use a different external hard drive reader and pull the data, provided it's not the drive itself. There are some things you can do to get a drive that has sector issues somewhat repaired to read the data, but if it's mechanical, pretty much the only thing you can do is send it off to get the platters read, which costs around $1000-3000.

I "think" it is something to do with the power supply. Not sure if it is the wall plug or the plug on the side of the drive itself. After posting I noticed that the module that holds both the power plug and the usb are loose and moving up and down within the box and now the mini usb won't stay in the plug. I will likely take you up on your offer Railing....you are generous as always and it is appreciated. Thanks to all who responded.
Fust FYI...... Railing keeps all nudey pics found on hds for payment.......![]()

Wow you guys totally beat me to this one! Good work :-)
Let me know when you want to come down to Louisville. Bring another drive that is capable of holding the files off the first and we can get them moved over, provided we can read from the drive.
