    OVERHEAD set cost????

Does anyone have an idea what the cost is to have an overhead ran on you bike? I do know how to check mine and have found that several valves are way to tight and out of spec or borderline. I thought about doing it myself but the cost to order the shims along with me being unsure about setting the timing after i remove the timing chain has me a little scared to take it on.

Well I said screw it I ran through the overhead and found that the valves are good they are all around 5 on the intake and 8 on the exhaust which is on the tight side but its within spec..

I've done it before, if they are still within spec just leave it alone. It's not that difficult though to shim them if you had too, the. Key is just having a good service manual to get the timing right. There are marks on all the cam gears and everything should line up perfect if the manual is followed. It's not like a belt driven cam where one tooth is just slightly off after you tighten the tensioner. With a chain or gear driven cam, one tooth is a lot and there is no doubt when it's off.

The service manual I have is pretty good except the dang pictures that show where marks and shit are but during the running of the overhead i did find all timing marks and thought to myself hell I could do this LOL.......if I can build diesel engines and auto engines I can do this.....

How long did it take to go through? I have the same bike and want to check mine. I downloaded the FSM But havnt really had the confidence to dive into it. That and i dont have the shim kit if i end up needing it. I know im past the recomended service point and would like to take care of it this winter.

took me around 4 hours and wished I would have took photos or video of me going thru it and I may go do it again to help show how I did it since the ol girl is still apart in garage mine had 18000 on it and the lashs were good and still in spec, but it does pay to check it just for piece of mind. I had one a few years ago that I nevered checked and end up dropping a valve which was not cool.....also if you have a little bit of a mechancial mind at all and have ran overheads on cars or trucks ever this will be easy it just looks a little harder than it really is. Spec for this bike is 4 to 8 intake side and 8 to 12 on the exhaust side.
