I found a very helpful website for doing your own Valve clearances!!!

I do all my own motorcycle work and am in the middle of putting Yoshi Race cams in my 03' gsxr1000. When I put the new cams in almost all the clearances were too tight. I have the manual on my laptop but went on a search to find a website to assist me in determining the correct shims to use to get them within factory tolerances.
I found it and I have to say it was dead on. The only issue is that some shim kits or even manufactures only make certain number of shims. Very few use numbers like 158,162,168 in aftermarket sets. I had to order some shims from denniskirk and they worked great. But you have to decide if you’re stuck in between shims which way you go with it.
I was given a few odd numbers like 157 and 153/152, so I decided to use either 155 or a 160 shim. I usually go for the tighter number unless it is only 1 away from the closest shim number.

For most major Manufactures they almost all use the same tolerances. Intake is usually 0.004-0.008in (.10-.20mm) Exhaust side is usually 0.008-0.012 (.20-.30mm). Of course you should check with the Service manual to be sure. And it is strictly personal preference what tolerances to run, tighter or looser side. I'm middle of the road but lean toward the looser side.

    The website is:
    http://www.maultechatv.com/techguide...ator/index.php

When it asked for shim thickness be sure to add the . in the number. The number stamped in the shim will be like 160,165,180 so put it in as 1.60, 1.65, 1.80 otherwise it gives you a crazy aZZ number.

    Hope this helps someone out.
