Beauty is in the [squinty] eye of the beholder.

You know it's bad when the German is dissing the crowning achievement in German superbikes.

I personally think the BMW is gorgeous.

Now the real question is how much horse power does it take to run the vacuum pump? It must be less than the horsepower gained through it's added efficiency. Seems like it would make a pretty big difference at higher RPMs considering inside the engine the pistons are displacing a liter of air 216 times per second.

PS the boiling point comment was a joke although I would expect that would be a negative side effect of pulling a vacuum on the crank case.

I knew you had to be joking about the boiling point vs the air pressure below the pistons. But it wouldn't take very much wattage to run a tiny pump that puts a negative differential in the case. Think about putting a vacuum in a beer bottle and then sticking your tongue in it. No problem!

Technically, decreasing the pressure in the crank does lower the boiling point of the oil, but the amount of pressure would need to be significant to matter I guess.

i wouldnt think that a small amount of vacuum would effect the boiling point much.

i read somewhere that vacuum pumps are sometimes used in racing engines to help in sealing the piston rings to the cylinder walls.
