Being in decent shape really helps prevent losing focus as the day wears on.

I think the faster I ride the more likely I won't get bored.

Take the back roads, stop about every hour at a local gas station and ask directions, if needed. I have been down that way several times and it's a great ride. Not very much construction, if any. When you do stop, drink a sports drink, that made a big difference for me. I second the comment about the seams in underwear. Towards the end of a long ride, you'll really feel those seams. Have a great time and be carefull.

I just picked up some Under Armour Heat Gear at Bass Pro for a really good price. I think I'm set and thanks for the great recommendation.

Looks like a fun trip. When are you planning on going?
I'll be heading to SC in a couple of weeks myself, but stopping at Columbia to visit my brother.

I'm leaving this weekend and returning and hitting the gap next week sometime. I'm keeping my schedule loose so that I can take time to enjoy it all. Are you planning to ride or drive?

Quick update on the trip.

Put 621.5 miles on the bike in one day riding from Louisville to Charleston, SC. I took the interstate the whole way. Headed up to the gap in the morning, but taking my time (avoiding speed traps). Staying in Murphy, NC and riding the area from there. Heading back to Louisville Wednesday afternoon.

Another tip on riding long distance:

* Get a massage a day or so before you leave (not the love you long time/happy ending type)

don't leave louisville around midnight headed for eastern TN and ride through misty rain gradually turning into a monsoon by the end of the trip at 7am the next morning. just sayin'

in case you do run into rain/fog/conditions that make your visor fog, take some precautions. riding in a rainstorm on the slab with semis with your visor up and only safety glasses really, really sucks and can be dangerous.

1532 miles total, 911 miles the last two days. I'm ready to do it again! I picked up some FroggToggs from Deal's Gap Motorcycle Resort for cheap (their prices on some things were better than what I expected).

Thanks everyone for the great advice. The trip wouldn't have been the same without it.
