R&D has the weatherproof 12v adapters. Piece of cake to install.

I would stop every 100-150 miles to rest, refuel, and snack. You don't really need much else.
I'm with coyze on this....no need to slabbing it. 1 hour on the expressway and I'm done.

10 hours is not bad but if you are riding for days I would suggest NO BACKPACK.

Other than that I never had any issues on my cross country ride.

Oh yeah, pack some frog toggs.

Thanks for the advice on that because that was something I was debating about. I usually carry a laptop in my backpack, but I should have plenty of space for that in my luggage. I probably should consider selling my laptop and going with a $200 netbook in the future for these types of trips.

I checked out my route on Google maps and the backroads are actually shorter by 20 miles than taking the interstate. My concern also is that I don't know how well the backroads are maintained and if I get way out in the BFE, will I be able to get stuff I may need: cell coverage, fuel, etc. The other thing is that I know my way via the interstates and I can see myself getting lost on the back roads (which may not be good considering my complexion ).

You'll be fine between here and Deal's Gap on the backroads.

Take the back roads, stop about every hour at a local gas station and ask directions, if needed. I have been down that way several times and it's a great ride. Not very much construction, if any. When you do stop, drink a sports drink, that made a big difference for me. I second the comment about the seams in underwear. Towards the end of a long ride, you'll really feel those seams. Have a great time and be carefull.

I'm planning to ride down to Charleston, SC and hit Deal's Gap on the way back.

Here is what Google suggests for the highway http://tinyurl.com/37svv3f and here is the suggested "back road" route: http://tinyurl.com/2wp8b62.

Looks like a fun trip. When are you planning on going?
I'll be heading to SC in a couple of weeks myself, but stopping at Columbia to visit my brother.

Being in decent shape really helps prevent losing focus as the day wears on.
