I agree with Sam in that required service would expose more of our priveledged citizens to what we have been doing to our poor people who carry the largest burden of serving our country. Maybe policy makers attitudes would change if their children where in harms way.

Most all countries today have some sort of conscripted army.

Doesn't matter to me...I did my time.
I'm with you, I've done my time and enjoyed it. However, there are a lot of countries that have some sort of mandatory requirement for "social service". With the economy being what it is, the US Armed Forces can afford to be very selective these days. I have a nephew that waited 6 months to get into the Air Force and if he does not score 85% or better on his test's, he's out! I did notice the bill was but (this time) by a Democrat! Makes you want to get involved with the TeaParty movement. If you just sit by and bitch, you can't affect anything!

Well... better than here but it still sucks. The unemployment numbers are not representative of who actually has a job.

Case in point. My mom lost her job over there a few month ago. Over there, people that are unemployed are sent to classes while they are looking for work. For the last three months she took a Microsoft Excel class, a Word class, and a couple of business/bookkeeping classes.(An IT person would be sent to IT courses, etc...) This makes them more marketable, and as a result, makes it easier to find work. The government benefits because while she was attending these classes, she was essentially listed as a student- not unemployed. If a prospective employer called her for an interview, she would miss that day of class, but attendance was otherwise required. She could also do a trial run of two weeks for a potential employer. For those two weeks, you can work somewhere, and the employer doesn't have to pay you- you still collect welfare. If things don't work out, you part ways, and no one had to go through the trouble of hiring. She had her interview a few weeks ago, did a one week trial, to start work. She offered them another week of free work if she could finish up her classes. At the end of the course, gets whatever certificates/certifications she earned at the completion of the course. She starts her job full-time on Monday.

Over there, the biggest abusers of the system are the ones that get refugee status. The Poles, Russians, and Turks are generally the stereotypical ones. There was a Russian that used to come into a local gas station every day and cash his welfare check, buy a fifth of Vodka, down half of it right there, and walk out with his bottle and a pack of Lucky Strikes (they still sell them with filters over there).

So the abuse happens everywhere, but there seem to be more safeguards over there for the unemployment ends of things. Refugee welfare is a whole other animal...

Germany has a multi-party political system. For years, there has been a party that is similar to the Tea Party. There platform is basically less welfare, no support for non-citizens, etc... In a nutshell- get rid of the foreigners and spend the government money more wisely.

Yeah I heard the Turks live in the slummier parts of the cities. Well, at least in Nuremberg they do.

can anyone make a case for conscription/draft/forced civil service NOT being a form of slavery?

let's discuss the root of the issue, not whether you had fun in the military, think those spoiled rich kids need to be taught a lesson or what not.

No but I could argue that paying taxes into the welfare system has the stench.

    you're getting ahead of things . . . . .

bear in mind you're talking to a pretty hard-core libertarian. this thread is a 'teachable moment' and i'm looking to make a few points for the statists, liberals and others who think using force to teach lessons and take things that aren't theirs is a good idea

I relent to the dogma of the Libertarian. I now see the light. Ayn Rand is now my god and savior. Hail to the almighty industrialist. Teaching point win.
