The VFR will behave herself very well by laying off the throttle up the hill and giving it to her after - these are heavy bikes and it takes some effort to get air - Do like Railing says: grab hard with your knees and put your behind firmly back in the seat. Down shift to slow down just before the crown if you don't want air - nothing wrong with caution here. The brake link system works mostly from the front brake, not so sure if you just used the rear it would engage the front - I've only used both in emergency stops and usually just the front to get the right entry speed for me. (slower in - accelerate out)

Anyway, I am always afraid of not being able to predict what is over the crown of the hill so I have always done it this way and haven't gone airborne - but I might drive the faster people behind me nuts which is why I hang back... You can always catch up to people in the straights or when they get stuck behind a tractor

    my approach on hills...

riding roads like 337 with jumps... For beginners... just slow way down...

I personally dont like to play with the throttle much. I maintain a steady speed whether i want to take the jump fast or slow. With my weight, it knocks the bike completely off balance if i try accelerate or let off the throttle before. I lift my butt off the seat before the top of the hill or jump while keeping my body (arms & legs) completely relaxed. This helps my body and bike absorb the impact when i make contact. once my bike regains traction i accelerate a little bit to keep the front end down. lastly, i get back to my riding position... My butt is off the seat and my body is relaxed during the entire transition...

I'm no pro though... this is what has helped me.. maybe JimmyV can comment further since he is used too high speed jumps...

Honestly the best advice I can give is to just slow way down. If you are having a problem getting bucked out of the seat then you need to get your butt off the seat right before you crest the hill. The reason it bucks you is because all that upward energy transfers straight through the bike and into you which just sends you off into the air... not fun. If you were to actually try to jump it at speed then right before you reach the crest you roll off then right back on as you're about to go over it. That kind of re-torques the motor and makes you land on the back wheel first. If you don't re-torque the motor and you go flying over the jump then you'll almost always land front wheel first and that's when shit gets hectic at speed. The bottom line is, if you're uncomfortable with carrying speed over those crests, then just go slower. I'm sure I would be the slowest one over those hills on 337 on open roads because you never know what's on the other side.

I guess coming from dirtbikes, I don't even think about how the bike will behave over the crest of a hill, other than how to keep the front wheel down.

I agree with everyone on the "slow down" aspect. If you're not comfortable with the speed that you're riding, then slow down. 337 is a weird road, and some of those little hills have a slight curve on the downside of them.

When the speed gets up enough to where you start lifting off the seat, I'd say the best thing to do is get your weight on the footpegs, not the seat.

I haven't been on that road, doesn't sound like one I'd care for.

This is a video from 2007.....it shows quite a bit from 337. You'll see several parts in the video of bikes getting both wheels off the ground.
