It is a tough decision. I have a general rule of thumb, that no-one under the age of about 25 should have a sport bike because their nuts are bigger than their brains. I have had to try and talk my younger brother out of bikes for years, because frankly, I knew he was not responsible enough.

bingo a certain level of maturity is a good thing before trying out a full on sportbike

Some ppl mature more than others, age has nothing to do with it. Ive been supporting myself since i was 16, riding tarc to work just so i had money to go shopping, out to eat with friends or having fun on the weekends. I was fortunate enough to have trust funds from grand parents and my dad bought me my first car, basically i have never paid for one of my vehicles i own. Thats a different story but, i bought my first sportbike when i was 18 years old, 97 ninja zx-9r and rode it for about 6 months, sold it cause i couldnt wheelie it easily and bought a 01 gsxr 1000, never wore gear, helmet sometimes. I will say this bike could have got me in a lot of trouble, i'll admit i was immature on this bike. Joined this site eventually, saw how effective gear was and that i wouldnt be the only dummy in 90 degree weather with full leathers on, so i bought a jacket, gloves and rocked the helmet every day. Eventually i felt i couldnt corner like i wanted on the gsxr so i sold it and got the R1. Now i am ATGATT and dont ride to impress ne more. I'd say i finally grew up at the age of 21/22 and realized that ppl wreck with gear and are home with their family that night, ppl wreck without and are in the hospital for 3 weeks or longer. Didnt want the medical bills so i chose to wear gear.

Just saying, ive been delt some bad cards in my life. Deceased mother at age 9, alcoholic father, and living in the ghetto. All signs pointed to a life of drugs and crime for me however ive never touched drugs and had my one felony dropped to wreckless driving (damn gsxr). However, age has nothing to do with maturity level, its all a mindset and i really dont know who i looked up to cause everyone i knew was not a good role model. I guess i just saw ppl making stupid decisions and really didnt wanna do that myself. But i will agree that kids are immature, you just have to use your own judgement to determine if they are too immature at the age of 18, 22, or 30. I know some 30 year old guys that are more immature than some 18 year olds.

I dont have kids: But i believe i will not discourage my kids from riding if its something they really want to do, i know as soon as i do, they will talk to grandpa and find out daddy had a bike when he was 19 and all of a sudden daddy is a hipocrit and they lose all respect for him. LEAD BY EXAMPLE. Preach about gear and what it can do for you. Thats what helped me.

Kcrone(should reappear in a couple days on here) 18 years old, had a bike last year too. Sold last years bike and just got a new one with the help of his parents for a grad present. Very nice kid, and wears gear everytime he is out from what i know.

When you have kids and they become teenagers your attitude will change. Trust me on this one.
