I also realize that many of those rides got out of hand as far as "crowd control" but soooo many of the lesser experienced people could learn so much from those old school rides. Many of us wouldn't be the riders today if it had not of been for those rides of yesteryear. .
I have been a member for a bit but I have never went on ride with anyone on this site. I almost went on one last year.....but I over slept. Actually you guys ride way too fast for me, and wear way too much gear in the 90 degree weather. I enjoy watching the playfull banter that goes back and forth between you all, knowing everyone is good friends. You have a tight group for the most part. Id do beer/chips with yall at hooters but thats about it.

Not everyone rides fast all the time. I lead a few beginner rides that was a nice pace and people appreciated them. I'll keep this in mind for next season (or what is left of this season) and try to take out another group or two before the snow, ice, and salt cover the roads.

As far as gear, you can't have enough. Even stopped at a light can be dangerous for a rider so we push all gear all the time, but the amount of gear you wear on a ride is your personal responsibility.

You do NOT have to keep up! Some funner parts, the more experienced ones might ride ahead, but they ALWAYS wait. Not to mention EVERYONE I have met on here so far is MORE than willing to help you improve your skills.

i think its less about keeping up and more along the lines of just wanting to enjoy a ride with peers. you're not with peers if you're 4 miles behind the pack because you don't have the confidence or the skills to dive into corners like ben spies. ur with cagers and a sweeper. i hear a lot of "fast is for the track", which is good advice. fast is fast, its not relative.

i enjoy the rides and it doesn't hurt my feelings that people have to wait on me. but i would enjoy a more leisurely pace riding next to someone even more.
